The Big One – IIM Ahmedabad

IIM, Ahmedabad

PGPX Students and Faculty at IIM,Ahmedabad assemble to get an intro to The Third Curve.

And finally the big one – IIM, Ahmedabad.  This was made possible thanks to Mr Manish Patel who had stayed with us along with his family at the farm.  A successful businessman from Ahmedabad and one of the prime mentors of Riverside School, Manish had read the book and was convinced that something more needed to be done to take it to the world.

The session was well attended by about 70 members – senior students from the PGPX program and assorted faculty.  The PGPX group consists of managers with over 10 years of experience in the real world and so formed a very discerning audience to present these radical thoughts to.  I had a head start with the PGPX group before the talk as they were the ones that were part of the welcome team. Over lunch I initiated them into the perspective of Energy and Economic growth.  I must say that I was pleasantly surprise at the receptivity.  Initially I had apprehensions from what some friends had told me about IIM Ahmedabad folk and there staunch belief in the existing paradigm.  But all that was put aside and we started a very fruitful presentation.

Despite the attempts of a particular professor who tried his best to hijack the authenticity and depth of my argument, the audience was firmly with me.  And towards the end this ex-Harvard prodigy had to make a hasty retreat out of the hall before he was faced with imminent defeat at the end of the lecture.

With IIM Ahmedabad done I feel a surge of confidence for the immediate future of my book and the chances of acceptance of the paradigm shift from economics to energetics that is swiftly descending on us whether we want to accept it or no.

Riverside School Hyderabad

Std 7 to 12 students of Riverside School, Ahmedabad

I thoroughly enjoyed talking to the children of this unusual and spirited school shaped by Kiran Sethi.  Kiran asked me to speak about my journey in the context of Success and Joy. And I spoke completely ex-tempo weaving in all the core aspects of my changing goals as I went through engineering, IIT, Cornell and MIT, to land up in Bollywood and then in Coonoor on a farm.

I tried to highlight the core principles of joy and inner belief that have always guided me through success as much as through failure. And both those were secondary to the joy I felt while doing it.
Of course all topics lead to ‘The Third Curve’ and so I gave a quick glimpse of that too to the kids. Many caught on quickly and we had a lively talk after.

Coonoor Club hears about Peak Oil & End of Growth

Coonoor Club - 22 Feb 2014

Over 70 members assemble before Gala Night celebration to hear The Third Curve concepts.

And finally I got the right opportunity to introduce my home town folks to the flavour of The Third Curve.

Over 70 members of the Coonoor Club attended my talk an hour before the monthly Gala night event.  Mr Suresh, the club entertainment secretary and the founder of the Riverside School where our kids studied, did the introductory speech to my talk.  I was most pleasantly surprised at the turnout and even more with the intent focus with which the audience was following the lecture.  Must say I could not have expected it to go better.

The rest of the evening was obviously splattered with residual discussions on the topic in between the usual revelry 🙂

CII gets a taste of The Third Curve

CII Lecture - 8 Feb 2014

A presentation and dinner at the Windsor Manor, Bangalore for CII members organised by Green Building Council

Thanks to Mr. Naresh Narsimhan, an architect from Bangalore, who I connected with at the Times Literary Carnival Fest, I was invited to speak to a very discerning audience consisting of green building proponents, architects, industry folk and social activists.  The event was organised by Green Building Council for The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) members and was held at the Windsor Manor Hotel, Bangalore.

I must say that it was one of the most satisfying presentations for me as I could feel the audience that consisted of senior executives and experienced business folk were getting every bit of the points I was making.  I met many interesting people at the venue and I hope to keep in touch with them.

Third Curve Lecture for Commits Institute of Journalism

Commits Institute of Journalism, Bangalore

Main building of The Commits Institute of Journalism, Bangalore.

I spoke to 500 students and faculty from various institutes of journalism at an event organised at the Commits Institute of Journalism and Management at Bangalore.

I to struggle a bit upstream in my talk as I was projected heavily as this Bollywood director and so it took a while before the audience realised that I had something else to talk about.  But by the end I had the audience thinking about the implications of my book.

One thing I reminded the audience about is that even if they were puzzled about what I had to say about the correlation between energy and growth, they would see it hindsight in the years to come as we continued our descent down the energy curve.

Third Curve at Times Literary Carnival Fest 2013, Bangalore

Times Literary Carnival Fest, Bangalore 2013

The Third Curve – The End of Growth as we know it, was featured in the Times Literary Carnival Fest 2013 at Bangalore.  I was introduced by Pallavi Aiyar, author of ‘Punjabi Parmesan’.

I gave a short 20 minute PowerPoint presentation followed by a Q&A.  The audience was suitably convinced of the argument that economic growth is in perpetual decline because of energy decline.

Crossword Books, the official vendors at the venue were super pleased when 20 books got sold.

Lecture at Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bangalore

Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bangalore.

I gave a 90 minute presentation and lecture at the Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bangalore for the first year batch of 160 students and about 15 faculty including the dean Mr. Rajesh.

The response was tremendous with the dean stating that it was the best guest lecture they had ever had.  I must say that the faculty was immensely open and responsive to the ideas I put forth that perpetual economic growth is over and in fact in perpetual decline.

A sure sign that things went well was that 22 books were sold and 5 were bought to be kept in the institute library.

My sincere thanks to Dr. Madhavi Sethi for making this happen.  She and her husband had also stayed with us at Acres Wild Farmstay and that is when the idea of the lecture germinated.

The Third Curve at Think 2013, Goa

Think 2013In a scintillating session moderated by Shoma Chowdhary and with Mr Vikram Mehta, ex Shell India presenting the counter point, The Third Curve – The End of Growth made its mark at the Think 2013 Fest in Goa in Nov 2013.

The audience of over 1000 thinkers made it aptly clear with their applause that my argument based on the lesser known discipline of Energetics that growth is over made a great deal of sense to them.  We set a record by selling 55 books right after the talk.  More important than the number of books sold, was the gushing response to the presentation.  The constant refrain was ‘how come we don’t get to here this from other sources?’.

The other response was a spate of invites to speak at various reputed institutes and forums.
